WORK EXPERIENCE

Smile Dental Care FD 2022-2023

At this practice, I was able to foster and maintain relationships with a wide variety of patients and provide a high level of care. This included the provision of emergency dental care for NHS 111 patients which included management of Dental Trauma such as the management of dental fractures, avulsion of teeth with reimplantation and splinting. Alongside this the execution of complex surgical extractions and extirpations alongside managing patients in pain which would often present with significant facial swellings. This has provided me with experience of working in a large team which consisted of 11 dental surgeries, plethora of dental nurses and receptionists. Further to this I have had the experience of treating a wide variety of patients who were engaging and had good historical attendance to patients who had never seen a dentist to patients who were poor attendees due to their dental phobia, this exposure further developed my patient management. I have had experience in placing Composite restorations under rubber dam, performed routine check ups, cleanings and other preventative dental care. I was able to navigate and manage a range of cases which encompassed direct and indirect restorations, endodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics and periodontics. Further to this I was able to work in high pressure environments such as bank holiday emergency clinics. Further to this, I have collated 80+ removable prosthesis, 25+ fixed prosthesis, 30+ endodontic treatment, 100+ direct restorations, 200+ extractions alongside reflections and patient satisfaction questionnaires available on my dental e portfolio.

DCT Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery 2023-2024

This post allowed me to advance my clinical knowledge and skills in secondary care which involved the management of cases referred from general dental practice or the presentation of patients in the emergency department. This post widely increased my exposure to oral medicine which included being the forefront in diagnosing, managing many soft tissue pathologies of a wide range which include fibroepithelial polyps, oral lichen planus to squamous cell carcinomas. This included consultations, management and conducting biopsies independently. Further to this being able to manage patients who have been referred for TMJD which can be quite challenging. I was able to work in large teams across multiple Hospitals such as Northwick Park, Wexham Park and Heatherwood Hospital which often involved multi disciplinary approach to optimise patient care which has optimised my communication, teamworking and leadership skills. This post has allowed me to fine tune my communication skills, empathy when looking after patients with cancer whether it is at the initial consult, biopsy stage, pre surgery, the ward and post surgery. This has involved dealing with family members as well as detoriating patients and patients who present to the emergency department with large facial swellings or significant facial trauma. Further to this I have honed my skills in managing patients with a complex medical history with a multi disciplinary approach when necessary. This can range from patients with a high risk of bleeding or high risk of osteonecrosis referred from primary care for dental extractions. I have worked alongside the orthodontic department which has exposed me to a plethora of patients varying in age and medical history as well as dealing with numerous patients with dental phobia. This has allowed me to develop my patient management skills and enable myself to guide patients through treatment in which they previously were anxious about. Clinically I have performed procedures under local, general anaesthesia as well as IV sedation. These procedures include surgical extractions of wisdom teeth, grossly decayed teeth, teeth difficult root anatomy/access, managing extractions in patients with complex medical history, orthodontic surgical removal of unerupted canines, premolars, supernumeraries, expose and bond of unerupted teeth, biopsies, cryotherapy. I have also been on call throughout the year and managing ward patients, this includes managing dental emergencies such as dental trauma which includes closure of facial lacerations, reimplantation, adjustment and splinting of teeth as necessary. Further to this includes manipulation of the TMJ, incision and drainage of dental abscesses and assisting in head and neck oncology cases.
